Our Newest Canning
Our latest canning of gourmet albacore is one of the tastiest yet! It's almost sold out and I just picked it up from the cannery on Wednesday. I heard rumors of a newspaper article on the East Coast featuring troll caught albacore such as ours....the health benefits, etc. Several orders this week were from new East Coast customers.

On Valentine's Day, The Seattle Post Intelligencer recommended a pop-top can of tuna be included in your back pack for a hike. "Hiking burns calories, so you want to eat foods that give you energy and nutrition. You also want your trail snacks to be lightweight. Try these treats...
1. Tuna (cans with pull-tops) and crackers. "

Steve flew back to resume command of the Papa George. Our skiffman, Henry, has gone home to Thailand. He loves the lifestyle there, especially riding his elephants. Cameron will take over for Henry in the skiff, while Rich & Marcus maintain the deck. They have a market order for Sunday night, weather permitting. However, checking the report on Wunderground, it looks like they'll need to keep an eye on the rain related wind. Wunderground is a weather website which uses whatever Zip code you enter to give an indepth look at the next 5 days of local WX. I usually go to the Marine Forecast Link and compare it to the local VHF radio reports. We also check the buoy reports which give the most accurate swell conditions. Around San Pedro, the bouy 46025 is handy. The best weather indicator is to stick your nose around the breakwater and feel it all on your face and in your stomach.

Squid Market Closes for a Week
Our squid buyer has closed for the week. They are cleaning out their cold storage in order to accept more fish. While the moon is full, it is a good time to take a little time off. Steve is home with me, and the crew has scattered from Bellingham,WA to Ventura,CA.

Papa George Tuna will have upgraded labels soon to comply with the new "country of origin" and "transfat" labeling laws. We have to reflect that our fish has Transfats - 0 mg., in italic, and that Papa George Tuna is a product of the USA.

Several of our tuna customers enjoy our albacore as part of their weight loss diets. The Zone Diet has a good sandwich recipe if you scroll down their page on this link. The South Beach Diet offers albacore packed in water (try ours in its own juice!) on day 6 for dinner. Then the reliable Atkins Diet has spawned several websites who invent delicious recipes for line-caught albacore like this "Albacore Tuna Melt".

New Product Line for Papa George Tuna
A new line of products will be introduced very soon to the website, Papa George Gourmet Albacore. We will feature a kosher line in both Original "cooked in its own juice", and in Extra Virgin Kosher Olive Oil. The can sizes will be 6oz. and 3.75oz. pop-tops. In addition, Papa George Gourmet will eventually can a Cold-Smoked Albacore in both 6oz. and 3.75oz.

Our label printer is busy on the proofs, and it will be two weeks after the labels are approved that they will roll off the press.

F/V Papa George skipper and husband is here on Lopez Island with me. His mother is very ill and we are both helping out in every way possible. Our boat is still fishing for squid in Southern California, but has been put on limit of 25 tons per night. Something is going on with the Chinese market at the moment, and we don't know exactly what it is.

More Yin/Yang about Mercury
This early morning, KGO radio filtered out my husband's snoring until I abruptly woke up upon hearing another ad about mercury in fish. The gist of it was that mercury in fish is poisoning our children and we must restrict their fish consumption. The ad was a promotion endorsed by the Ad Council and Earthshare, as a PSA. It was featured on a program called "America in the Morning." Earthshare collects donations from around the country for its approved NGO's such as National Wildlife Fund, the National Audubon Society, etc., all in all about 40+ organizations whose goal is to support the environment. I am concerned that "mercury in fish" is often used today to scare parents and pregnant women away from our troll caught albacore. "Mercury in fish" is also a topic used to garner donations. This tactic hurts small family businesses like ours who responsibly bring an excellent product, like our canned albacore, to market. Papa Goerge Gourmet Albacore is beneficial to human health, whatever the age.

On the other hand, The Voice of America aired a brief discussion that featured the test results of children who ate very little Omega-3 oils vs. children whose mothers ate plenty of fish and fed their children fish. The test results startlingly show that fish oil is more beneficial for childhood development, socially and neurologically. The benefits of our troll caught albacore far outweigh the small amount of mercury ingested.
